★ 3.0Santos is doing her job poorly with Harlow. there is room for empathy for whatever her personal situation is with Whitaker or Garcia and her complexity as her human, yes. but there is also the fact that she is blatantly doing a terrible job of trying to communicate with the patient. we are all aware of how inaccessible the world is for disabled people overall and her behaviour this entire time has been one of disregard. i acknowledge the effort she has made to try to get an interpreter and i understand her frustration with the system being shit and slow, because it is definitely not what it should be and the burden is falling on the doctors. but this isn’t new to her- she had to have known about these challenges going into medicine. walking out as soon as the interpreter that youve been begging for gets there just makes no sense? I don’t know if it’s just poor writing but theyre clearly setting this up for something major to happen.
the way she’s treating Harlow is straight up unkind and disrespectful at this point. and i saw a commenter mention that the first thing Harlow did was complain to the interpreter- i didn’t reply to that comment because i don’t want to start any arguments with people online about their opinion. but why can’t she complain to the interpreter first thing? you’re sick, not being treated well and can’t communicate with anyone and finally someone you can speak freely with arrives and you get judged for expressing frustration? all of these excuses about why Santos is being a shit care provider are null and void - there is a deaf patient who needs kindness and patience and compassion.
on a positive note, i love that moment with Santos singing to calm the baby.
